Original Art By Emmalou
Describe your art/craft?
My art is based on my love of nature, colour and creating art from natural fibres. my art work is created using a combination of wet and needle felting techniques.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
My family are all creative and their talents have been passed on to me in many ways. I have always been a creative person and studied art at university before going into an art / craft teaching career for around 20 years. I was inspired to try out felting by my sister who is also an exceptional artist and my love of textiles excelled in this medium. My parents inspired my love of nature as they both love animals and plants and I think this is reflected in my art work.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
I absolutely love the colours that I am able to use when working with felt, my favourite time is when I order some now fibres and they arrive and I am able to use them in a new art work, it feels like Christmas.
Where is your creative space?
I live on the Norfolk Broads and work from home in my conservatory although I tend to manage to spread out all over the house most of the time and I’m a bit messy which my creating but I think that’s the same for most artists/crafts people l.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
Normally if I’m in my craft room, I listen to the radio, although I do quite like listening to the tv in the back ground if I’m working in the living room, as then I can spend time with my children after school as well.
What's your best selling product?
I think my sea scapes have been one of my most popular art works although animal pictures are always very popular as well.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
I created a picture of a baby rabbit and fox looking at each other, I really loved it and was so pleased with the out come of the picture. I sold it at one of my craft fairs in Norwich, to a lovely couple who brought it for their daughters, I was very happy it went to a good home.
Random fact about yourself?
Only moved to Norfolk two years ago and i don’t like backed beans, is that random enough lol 😂
What new craft would you love to try?
I would love to learn more about Lino printing. I have a friend that is absolutely amazing at this and I always think I’d like to try and have a go.
Where can customers buy your products?
I have a social media page on Facebook and instagram, and I always post on there where I will be everytime I have a show or an exhibition. I also sell my art work at Beccles Farmers market, first and 3rd Saturday of each month, if I’m not there my mum takes my art work for me.
Give a shout-out to a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
I have a lovely friend called Lucy who create beautiful hand made pottery, her business is called blue fusion pottery and she creates the most beautiful functional art. I’m always inspired by Zoe Howard Art who create the most wonderful Lino prints based on nature and the local area.
