Samantha Yates Artisan Florist
Samantha creates unique and bespoke 2D and 3D floral artistry pieces either as stand alone art works or pieces that can decorate your walls. Made utilising an array of colourful dried and silk materials, Samantha's pieces are inspired by the natural world and from living close to the sea. Look out for Samantha's 'Seaside Collection' including mermaids, and stunning goddess Maristela 'Star of the Sea' with her head adorned with beautiful exotic sea shells and turquoise foliage; as well as her Healing Chakra Fairies, each with their own personality.

Interview With A Maker
Name/Business
Samantha Yates Artisan Florist
Describe your art/craft?
I create Artistry in dried and silk materials, embellished with complimentary accents of shells, pearls, crystals, in fact anything that works with the overall design and the clients space.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
After many years of working in various creative fields; Bridal, Fashion, Publishing and Personal Development, I recognised that I was looking for a new adventure that challenged me whilst still feeding my creative soul. Floristry came to me out of the blue during a period of personal development in 2018 and felt so natural, like coming home. I booked on a workshop in June and then enrolled at college in September for 2 years of Floristry, and immersed myself in all aspects of traditional Floristry.
In time I discovered that I didn't like the waste when working with fresh materials and storage was an issue too. I started using dried and silk materials and developed my skills and my passion for Floral Artistry. I learnt the basics at college and have since built on those through trial and occasionally error lol to create the bases and shapes that I use within my designs today. I'm a practical Capricorn and love a challenge so figuring out the mechanics of a design is all part of the fun.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
I've just discovered the joy of power-tools! Last year I used a jigsaw for the first time and loved it, I'm now keen to expand my collections of two tools. lol
Where is your creative space?
I work from home - in summer I like to set up my work camp in the yard in the sunshine, if the weather's not playing ball, I'll be in my shed or garage.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
I listen to various musical frequencies that help me to get into my creative flow. I've always said that music is like a secret language that connects to our heart-centre. The music helps me to relax and my creative inspiration just flows.
What's your best selling product?
My character Fabulous Fairies. Clients choose the hair colour/style, colour for the dress and what the Fairy will be holding ie the Fairy for a yoga instructor had her hands in prayer position. Another gift Fairy for a Mum's birthday wore an apron, a crown and was holding a tray of buns as she loves to bake. I've just finished a collection of 7 Healing Chakra Fairies holding crystal hearts.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
My favourite piece that I've made was my first Phoenix. I made it at a time that I was questioning myself, whether traditional Floristry was for me - I loved the creation process but found working with fresh materials so stressful. I also didn't like the fact that once the flowers had died, my customer had nothing left. This is the main reason that I began working with dried and silk materials, they last for years with a little TLC and a blow-dry.
The creation process for the Phoenix felt like my own rebirthing and a pivotal moment in recognising which direction I wanted my business to go in. It was emotional to let her go (The Phoenix) but she went to a very good home.
Random fact about yourself?
Debbie Harry of Blondie bought one of my corsets that I designed and made. I was supplying a range of sophisticated club-wear to Birdcage boutique in Nottingham and Debbie wore it at the gig she was performing there.
What new craft would you love to try?
I've always fancied Pottery.
