Interview With A Maker
Name/Business:
Angela Humphrey Designs
Describe your art/craft?
I create jewellery & gifts from gold, silver & copper & kiln-fired vitreous enamel.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I started silversmithing in 2006, did specialist courses in jewellery making, setting up a jewellery business in London, then I’ve been attending silversmithing courses in Wensum Lodge (adult education) in Norwich, and most recently just attended a very specialist short course in enamelling down in Sussex.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
I love my ‘fairy hammer’. Its only a 1oz hammer and creates a beautiful shimmering hammered texture on pieces that is reminiscent of the sparkling sea.
Where is your creative space?
I have a studio at my home, where most of my work is designed and made. I am open to inspiration everywhere though, particularly walks on the beach, and spending time in nature.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
Endless Netflix series. As I am usually focussed more on my work than the programme I end up watching them multiple times otherwise I miss key plot points!
What's your best selling product?
Each piece I create is unique, but my medium sized solid silver drop earrings in shades of blue enamel are a best seller. They capture the colours of the sea and make a perfect gift from Norfolk.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
I have quite a few favourites. I have disciplined myself to sell them now because I’m not a hobbyist anymore, this is my full time role – if I kept everything I loved I wouldn’t be earning money!
Random fact about yourself?
I’ve lived in 7 countries including Saudi Arabia and Japan.
What new craft would you love to try?
Stained Glass making, Gelli, and Cyanotype printing, Embroidered Collage. I have quite a long list of crafts I’d really like to try....
Where can customers buy your products?
On my website www.angelahumphreydesigns.co.uk, and there is a list of stockists there of all the galleries, shops and craft markets I’m sold in or attending too.
Give a shout-out to a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
Too many to mention them all here but Karen Woodcraft makes beautiful painted images with pebbles and driftwood here in Southwold. Her designs are original, beautiful and make perfect gifts.
