Interview With A Maker
Name/Business
Belinda Ashton Jewellery
Describe your art/craft?
I create colourful jewellery using polymer clay. Each piece is unique as I never repeat a design.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I have been using polymer clay for almost 10 years. I taught myself using books and watching videos. I joined the Anglian Polymer Clay Guild 7 years ago.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
My Atlas pasta machine which I use to condition the clay. I also have a large collection of books about polymer clay and way too many shape cutters.
Where is your creative space?
In our recently completed new home in Leiston, one of the bedrooms is my studio.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
Sometimes I listen to classical music, sometimes pop and sometimes I need silence or just the birdsong outside.
What's your best selling product?
Earrings are always popular, although I prefer making pendants.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
I didn't actually create it, just repaired it; the Murano Millefiori glass bead necklace that my grandmother gave me. When it broke and I lost some of the beads, I found replacements from Janet Coles Beads and then began buying and threading beads to make necklaces for myself and that led to making things for colleagues at work and then having a stall at fundraising events and discovering polymer clay.
Random fact about yourself?
I have had Type 1 diabetes for more than 60years
What new craft would you love to try?
There is still so many techniques I want to explore using polymer clay.
Where can customers buy your products?
I have my own website at https://www.belindaashton.co.uk/ for polymer clay items and on Etsy for my beaded items at https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/BelindaBeadBoutique
Give a shout-out to a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
My best friend at school Brenda and her daughter Mel, who are both artists and produce greetings cards, calendars and many other things https://atthecherrytree.co.uk/
