Interview With A Maker
Name/Business
Sam Thornton, owner/founder of Bergamot and Flow
Describe your art/craft?
I make aromatherapy pulse point oils to my own recipes in my garden shed in Beccles! I have expanded my range to include diffuser oils, a range of wellbeing boxes and chakra oils for use in yoga, reiki and cereal wellness. I like to think there is something for everyone (and there is more to come!)
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I have been using essential oils for around 6 years but the business is about 3 years old now. A lot I have learned myself, just because I am so interested in the subject and I do have a diploma in aromatherapy but I am now studying for a more formal qualification in clinical aromatherapy.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade’?
The oils themselves! My favourite is definitely bergamot, hence the business name! A citrus oils that both calms and uplifts, what’s not to love? Having said that, I do feel like a scientist when I use my glass pipettes and beakers for blending!
Where is your creative space?
My garden shed for making stock, also known as B&FHQ! I recently moved my office back inside the house though - winter was harsh! I may regret it if we get another scorching summer as I’ll want to back in the garden. My desk is far to heavy for me to be that fickle though!
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
When I’m blending I need quiet as the formulations are quite mathematical and I need to concentrate, but if I’m writing or simply filling bottles I always have a podcast or audiobook on the go. I’m in the middle of a Lisa Johnson podcast at the moment, she is a brilliant business strategist that I’m learning lots from. Other than that it’s usually a crime novel - how eclectic I am! Haha!
What's your best selling product?
Dreamland! My lavender based night time blend. People love it, even those who aren’t really lavender lovers, as it’s blended with other oils that takes the ’soapiness’ out of it. I do a pulse point oil or a diffuser blend, or an Immersive Experience gift box where you get both!
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
My chakra set! The first set of oils I ever made for myself. I love yoga and so wanted to incorporate oils into my practice and made myself a set that align with each chakra, the energy points that run up our spine. It’s still the same set today, although it’s had a bit of a glam up now!
Random fact about yourself?
I once had a painting hanging in the Mall Gallery in London. It was only the second piece I ever did but it won a competition I entered and there it was. No-one bought it though so it’s now in my lounge - not quite so prestigious!
What new craft would you love to try?
I love to craft! I’ve done so many over the years but I recently dabbled in quilling again and absolutely loved it! As for a new craft, I’d quite like to try polymer clay - there are so many gorgeous earrings out there and I want to try making some!
Where can customers buy your products?
I have a website, www.bergamotandflow.co.uk or at markets and fairs around Norfolk and Suffolk. My website has an events page where they are all listed.
Give a shout-out to a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
So many, I have to pick just one?? The lovely Donna at Gorse and Elder.
