Interview With A Maker
Name/Business
CraftyBuggerz - Gemma & Mychael
Describe your art/craft?
Mychael hand carves a range of sculptures and wall art all made from re-claimed furniture and I (Gemma) make decorative pieces and jewellery using stained techniques which incorporate pressed Norfolk wildflowers.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
We are both self taught and have been creating for around 4 years now.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
Mychael uses traditional palm chisels to carve all his pieces, my favourite is my glass grinder as it helps me to shape the glass pieces I use in my work.
Where is your creative space?
We share a workshop in our garden.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
The noise of lots of tools! Mainly grinders for the glass and sanders for finishing the wood.
What's your best selling product?
For Mychael, it's the worry pebbles & pendants. We've had so much positive feedback from people who say they have helped to soothe them in stressful situations. The wall hanging birds are always a hit too! Glass wise, my necklaces with pressed flowers and dandelion wishes are always popular.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
For Mychael it would have to be either the life-size Katana he built or "The Book Of The Dead" from the evil dead. Both have gone to their new homes.
Some of my favourite glass pieces have been the larger suncatchers I have made, I definitely need to make more!
Random fact about yourself?
We both love watching and playing darts!
What new craft would you love to try?
Mychael is happy with woodcraft where as I have tried many, many crafts and have found that my favourite is glasswork. I'm always open to learning new skills!
Where can customers buy your products?
You can find us on Etsy & Ebay. We attend events regularly throughout the year selling our pieces, if you follow us on Instagram/Facebook you'll see where to find us next.
Give a shout-out to a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
A couple of incredibly talented friends we've made are @fibreandearhstudios who makes the most incredible pottery pieces and @tw_leather_craft who makes beautiful leather bags and accessories.
