Interview With A Maker
Name/Business Creative Heather (Heather Carroll)
Describe your art/craft?
Colourful, purposeful, mainly textile craft including lampshades, memo boards, handknitted wrist warmers, lavender bags, hand printed tea towels and tote bags, cards and seasonal decorations. My craft is constantly evolving when inspiration hits!
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I have always been creating, drawing, producing collages...the original Blue Peter girl! I had a very inspiring art teacher at school, Mr Icke. My mum taught me to knit, I went on a lampshade making workshop but am largely self taught.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
I love the special 'teeth' tool that tucks the fabric under the rings to finish off a lampshade and my staple gun is in constant use.
Where is your creative space? All over the house!
I keep most of my tools, made items, fabrics, wools, sewing machine etc in my spare bedroom but my kitchen island is the ideal height for lampshade making.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
Sometimes the tv is on in the background but I actually like making items in a quiet space or talking to my husband, mum, brother or friend Louise as we make items together.
What's your best selling product?
My memoboards and wrist warmers are both up there.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
I think the first one of something new are always favourites like my first ever memoboard (campervan fabric) sold via Facebook soon after. My first lampshade I made I still have.
Random fact about yourself?
I 'hooted' Northern spotted owls in Oregon for 3 months after finishing my degree.
What new craft would you love to try?
Crafts using glass especially fused glass.
Where can customers buy your products?
On my Facebook and Instagram pages @creativeheathersuffolk, Hoxne market, Laxfield market, Fram Makers market, this year at Country Living Spring Fair at Alexandra Palace 23 - 26 April, Ivy Joan Makers market in Bury St Edmunds and regularly at Planet Craft the Southwold Artisan Craft Market.
Give a shout-out to a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
The potter, Margaret Parsons, from Pakefield, another Planet Craft regular.
