En-Joy Felts
Joy uses needle-felting to make incredible fibre sculptures of wildlife and pets. Commissions can be taken of your pets or other requests. Joy has created an amazing menagerie of both domestic and exotic animals, as well as figures and beautiful felt roses. Why not look out to see if she's made your favourite animal?

Interview With A Maker
Name/Business
Joy Thorpe - En-Joy Felts
Describe your art/craft?
I make sculptures from sheep’s wool using a barbed needle. It’s very time consuming and some of my pieces can take 80 hours. I aim for realistic animals and occasionally people.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I’ve been felting about 3 years. I’m self taught but the creative process is similar to a lot of other sculpture in different mediums. My father was an artist and he taught me sculpting from an early age.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
My books on animal anatomy and my enormous stock of wool in all firms.
Where is your creative space?
I have a log cabin craft room and a barn for larger projects but most of my needle felting is a corner of the sitting room in front of the tv.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
Depends what I’m making. I prefer quiet if it’s something complicated
What's your best selling product?
It varies. I tend not to make cats and dogs preferring more unusual animals. But I can never keep an elephant for long, they sell pretty quickly.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
I have lots of favourites and they stay with me. Sculptures of my horse, a meaningful sculpture of hands and a posing dancer are my top ones.
Random fact about yourself?
I’m a horsewoman first and foremost. My mother told me I’d grow out of it. I’m 69 now and I think mum was wrong.
What new craft would you love to try?
Paper mache sculpture. I've had a play but it’s seriously messy
