Interview With A Maker
Name/Business
Linda - She Sews Totes
Describe your art/craft?
Handmade reversible fabric Totes and Bags.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I took GCSE Needlework at school and made a few garments in my late teens but my interest in sewing was reignited during lockdown 2020. I fortuitously received a sewing machine Christmas 2019, which ended up being the best present ever. It kept me busy during the months I was furloughed and I had forgotten just how much I enjoyed sewing. Also during this time, I made and donated about 100 face masks, when they were in short supply. Things evolved and I moved onto making reversible Totes. I registered my business in September 2021.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
Has to be my Janome sewing machine, it's not the most technically advanced machine but it does what I need it to do.
Where is your creative space?
I started off downstairs, in a fairly spacious room that looked out onto the garden but it made more sense to move upstairs into a spare bedroom, which unfortunately, is not quite so spacious.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
I listen to all sorts but generally 80' and 90's music.
What's your best selling product?
Up until recently I've concentrated on just making a wide range of good quality reversible Totes so I don't really have a best seller. One with a large bee on, is pretty popular. Lately I have been working on a reversible crossbody bag which I hope will sell well.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
My favourite thing was a Tote I made for a very good friend's 50th birthday in April 2020. It consisted of dark purple corduroy and a monochrome fish scale patterned fabric. It was one of my first proper makes; my friend was very happy and quite impressed with it.
Random fact about yourself?
I work full time as a Sales Administrator at a local label broker.
What new craft would you love to try?
Silver clay jewellery; I had a taster day many years ago but would love to have another go. Glass fusing.
Where can customers buy your products?
Generally at makers Markets in Suffolk and I am on Facebook and Instagram. I am also looking to try out one of the online crafting sites this year.
Give a shout-out to a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
Love DHW Silver, Emma Greenwood Art and At the Cherry Tree.
