Interview With A Maker
Name/Business
Soap Stuff
Describe your art/craft?
I make hand made soaps using both the cold process method and melt and pour method. I also make shampoo bars, lotions, lotion bars, bath salts and gift sets.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I first did a 'make your own cosmetics course' back in 2001 when I lived in Australia. I then started it again in 2019.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
My favourite part is the creativity and uniqueness of each item.
Where is your creative space?
I work at home and am also a member of a community non profit called 'Colchester Makerspace'
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
Radio 4 - preferably Womans Hour.
What's your best selling product?
At fairs its my Lavender and Lemon Soap - called Yellow fields named after the Suffolk and Norfolk yellow rapeseed fields . Online it's mini heart soaps that are used as wedding favours or stocking fillers.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
A cat shaped soap dish but alas I sold it!
Random fact about yourself?
I did a degree in Podiatry!
What new craft would you love to try?
At the moment I am learning crochet - it's a slow process!
Where can customers buy your products?
on Etsy - soapstuff UK but I try and do monthly craft fairs locally too
Give a shout-out to a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
Elsie Moss botanicals is another soap maker I follow on instagram and I love her style and creations. Also I admire 'I dream of soap' who uses soap dough in her creations and is very artistic.
