Interview With A Maker
Name/Business
The Tea Lady
Describe your art/craft?
Making delicious jam, chutney and marmalade
How long have you been creating?
I have been making jam since I was 11 years old, and before I started my business I regularly created handcrafted food hampers for Christmas gifts, but now I think that's a a bit cheeky
How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I learned basic skills from my mum, and developed these over the intervening years. I have also spent time improving my making skills in Somerset with Vivien Lloyd.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
Tool - automatic pressure cookers
Where is your creative space?
Cooking, labelling, packing, storing and equipment has overtaken a fair proportion of the ground floor of my house plus two rooms in an outbuilding! At the moment I cook in my domestic kitchen, but I'm now building a commercial kitchen elsewhere.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
Anything that I can play on my ipad.
What's your best selling product?
Hard to choose between - Rhubarb & Gin Jam and Orange & Single Malt Marmalade
At Christmas - Plum & Mulled Wine Jam
What is your most favourite piece of work you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
Red Onion & Fennel Marmalade because it was my first original flavour and that's where it all started. I still make and sell it.
Random fact about yourself?
I'm potty about German Shepherd Dogs and enjoy agility training with my dogs.
What new craft would you love to try?
I'd love to draw/paint
