Interview With A Maker
Name/Business:
Hannah (White Rabbit Black Cat co)
Describe your art/craft?
It’s very varied! I love illustrating in gouache, pen and ink, and digitally. I also love relief printing and working with clay. My style is very versatile too - from bright and chunky to delicate and detailed. What brings it all together, though, is the love of animals and the natural world which is at the heart of everything I do.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I’ve been creating all my life, though I only started sharing my art online and for sale in August 2020. My grandad was a talented watercolour artist in his spare time, and used to draw with me from the time I was a baby. Other than that I am completely self-taught in all the different mediums I work in.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
Honestly, it would have to be a pencil; without one, I couldn’t make anything. Even when I work digitally I always start with a pencil sketch on paper. I take a pencil with me everywhere I go, as I like to draw on train journeys, in cafes and basically anywhere I can sit still for a little while.
Where is your creative space?
I live in a little one-bedroom flat with my rescue rabbit, Everest, and so my living room is where all of my art takes place (apart from lino printing, which happens in the kitchen).
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
I get through podcasts like nobody’s business, particularly ones that are centred around some sort of mystery, or ones that tell stories of eccentric figures throughout history. My TV habits are embarrassing: I love to binge watch soft reality TV programmes like ‘Come Dine With Me,’ ‘Four in a Bed,’ or ‘Interior Design Masters’. My excuse is that I work from home, and live alone, so the small talk and low stakes are good company!
What's your best selling product?
Online it is my pigeon wrapping paper. I started drawing pigeons because I love them, but they have a bad reputation. When I started selling my pigeon designs I was delighted to find so many other people felt the same! At markets it’s probably a toss-up between my clay slug ornaments or my snail lino prints. Again, I’ve noticed many people have a soft spot for the creatures that others consider pests.
Favourite thing you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
My favourite thing I’ve ever created often tends to be the most recent thing I’ve made, as I do not have a very long attention span. At the moment that happens to be a mini greyhound lino print that I made using a scrap piece of lino.
Random fact about yourself?
My biggest regret is not going to university for art.
What new craft would you love to try?
I have always wanted to use a letterpress, and I often try and replicate the old-letterpress dappled ink effect when I’m relief printing.
Where can customers buy your products?
They can find me at a range of wonderful makers markets across Suffolk throughout the year, through my Etsy shop (Etsy.com/shop/WRBCCo) or my website whiterabbitblackcat.com
Give a shout-out to a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
Owen Berry from MF Gallery & Framing in Ipswich. His art inspires me because, like me, he practices a broad range of styles and methods.
