Interview With A Maker
Name/Business:
Wickhams Candle Company
Describe your art/craft?:
Wickhams makes hand poured, 100% eco-soy wax scented candles and wax melts, as well as beautiful decorative candles.
How long have you been creating? How did you learn your craft or were you self-taught?
I’ve been making candles since I was little; I used to ruin all my Mum’s saucepans when I made them. Wickhams Candle Company has been running for about three years now.
What are your favourite art/craft 'tools of the trade'?
I love looking for new and interesting moulds, I’ve got quite a big collection now!
Where is your creative space?
I make all the candles at home in my flint cottage, so it really is a cottage industry.
What do you watch or listen to when you're creating?
Currently on repeat is Kurt Vile’s album ‘Bottle it in’, it’s an amazing album.
What's your best selling product?
It depends on the time of year and where we are, but I can safely say that our ‘Lemongrass and Ginger’ scented candle is a firm favourite.
What is your most favourite piece of work you've ever created? Do you still have it, or did you sell/gift it?
I guess I feel a great sense of attachment to the first candles I ever made. I’ve still got some and my Mum has still got some too.
Random fact about yourself?
I have an ever-growing collection of swords.
What new craft would you love to try?
I think I’ve got my hands full with making candles.
Where can customers buy your products?
We are out and about selling our candles pretty much every weekend from March until Christmas, follow us on Facebook to track us down. We can also post orders out and we sell on Etsy.
Name a fellow artist or crafter you admire!
Christopher Hollick – he’s an artist and a crafter and we’ve got lots of his work around our house.
